The convenience here for you is CarPlay though. You could instead use a different more accurate gps device you plugin that doesnt have the data leak issues concerned in articles like this one. Then if you really needed you could pull out a sort of external monitor stick it over the other display when carplaying and when needing car-vital features you need the car display for, pull over and temporarily do that thing then pull your extra monitor out again and keep going.
I think maybe being grounded has changed - I would be comfortable doing what I described but I imagine your comfort with your preexisting solution means your ground has shifted and a reality check means you woudl rather give away your data than take the higher friction option?
I think most people would not be on board with your solution, but in general to your point I would say everyone draws the line somewhere different.
Yes there are many (maybe most) who will not give up their comforts or risk modifying their vehicle in order to make it more private... but trying to play the judge in a made-up internet game of altruism olympics is not going to convert many people either.
And the DMV (Department of Motor vehicle Services) has also sold registration data. In California, and Texas, they have been fined for this - I'm unsure they aren't completely barred from using a loophole to still do that.
This is why I'm a vocal advocate for having an LLC own any vehicles you might drive. It protects you from the license-plate reading lookup as well from Flock et all. Though I don't know it guarantees you can't be looked up by insurance it's resistance by one more bit of friction. The vehicle I drive now is an old 2012 Lexus owned by Montana LLC and it also has no smart technology and very little insurance costs.
In California you can post a surety bond in lieu of insurance. I'm sure the same applies in other states with governance that is not captured by corporate interests.
Can you elaborate on this some? Afaik insurance is the only thing they would accept. I think insurance is generally a nasty scam so anything to get away from it would be pretty neat
You have to deposit $75,000 to the DMV and if you get in an accident where you're at fault you will also be on the hook for damages beyond that. You can also get a surety bond for that amount, instead of doing a cash deposit.
It used to be 35k but it was increased in late 2024 (which is good because it hadn't increased since the 70s).
But to do that you really have to hate insurers or be uninsurable. Because realistically putting that 75k in a basic HISA will yield enough interests to pay for regular car insurance and you get to keep your 75k.
Thats quite a lot more than i expected, i just have never had a good experience with insurance, everything is a long drawn fight. Probably not worth it unless under specific circumstances
They don't ask for license plates. At least through a camera tech like Flock, it isn't super easy to pick up a vin. So thinking this through more, at least having an insurance agency have your vin isn't as bad as having a flock & flock affiliated agency have your license plate - because if flock & flock affiliated dont have your vin they may never have the vin to find you via insurance company.
It's AI's Fault. It's AI doing the horrible things to humans. It's AI stealing your wealth. It's AI lying you to. It's AI being unethical. It's AI having the moral issues. It's AI that could destroy humanity. It's AI that's using up all your water. It's AI consuming the majority of the resources. It's AI hiding what it does and how it works. It's AI that's not transparent and accountable. It's AI that's not responsible. It's the AI making decisions. It's AI leading to war. It's the AI distracting you. It's the AI.
I realized that this is another function of the doom mongering and hand waving: if people buy it then they can get out of liability for what their stuff does.
If I build a machine on my property and it harms someone else or their property, I can get sued.
But if I hand wave and claim it’s alive and “I’ve lost control” then…
Maybe we should call this gambit the “Frankenstein defense.” It’s bullshit. Your AI, you’re liable for whatever it does.
What if it does something so destructive that liability becomes a meaningless fig leaf in the wind?
What if it escapes containment and remains u uncontainable in perpetuity? What if it generates a bunch of false media simultaneously across the globe to insulate world war? What if it turns of internet access or electric grids in major metro areas for prolonged period of time? Or bricks major infra? Or less dramatic, what if it drives 1 in 10 kids into panic psychosis and effectively takes away 10% of humanity with already dwindling reproduction trends (without explicit murder) all while draining our financial and health systems? What if it does a lot of these things at once?
I feel this is another straw man conflating technology use with who uses it or who creates it. If an AI, a technology, cheats, lies and steals, it's created to do this. Whether or not a human intentionally did that, they did not intentionally release it with the proper safeguards to stop that behavior. They did not take responsibility of the AI to make it safe.
Then humans may use these tools, a technology, again and cause harm. Whether or not that was their intent, it happened, and then if the humans avoid responsibility for that, it is still the human who lied, cheated and coordinated because a technology acting on their behalf did the thing.
This is then, a problem of human responsibility avoidance and lack of accountability by society. This is as much an AI doing those things as it's the gun that got up on its own and murdered a neighbor. Don't get confused and tricked by these articles attempting to justify responsibility avoidance and a lack of accountability by the public of the humans creating and using these tools.
So for mold, low enough doses aren't poison? Can't you just say this about anything. If you have poison in a low enough dose it's not poison. So it means jsut about nothing to say alcohol isn't poisonous because you can have a small dose of it.
Fentanyl is actually much more toxic than the mycotoxins produced by mold (which I'm guessing is what you're referring to), and yet fentanyl is generally recognized to be a useful drug because of its therapeutic effects. If something has no possible therapeutic, recreational, nutritional, or culinary effect, while being toxic, it might be fair to characterize it as a 'pure poison'.
That's a good definition. Still, you can take it literally - anything small enough doesn't really harm you. and meanings can be stretched to support whatever conclusions you want.
we used to think electrons were the smallest particles, until they were not.
and I think talking about breaking molecular bonds though or bringing "fundamental forces" into this is misleading and disingenuous. the point of the OP is to say, "you can take anything in a small enough dose and its not poisonous"
And when you say prions or whatever like you were, my point is if you take small enough doses even of those, you won't be poisoned. you get what I mean, so lets not waste each others time on trying to confuse impossibilities with reality. you won't be getting hurt or die or meaningfully poisoned by ingesting one "prion" or particle of "strange matter". and now when you describe any "poison" with this model, say you ingest 1 particle of even a pure poison, you won't be getting hurt or die.
The big psyop/trick is that "AI development has to slow down" and not that we hit limits with the technology or the technology is immature.
Either way it's a win-win for whoever sells that message because you make the makers and the warners the center of attention. And when they say "we are considering slowing down" they mean "if we get enough money to slow down we'll do it". And of course they never want you to think AI is a technology employed by humans who need be changed, not the technology. So as long as you engage this massive straw man to focus on the wrong thing you do nothing to hold the leaders accountable for their harmful and selfish actions and decisions for society.
The message was directed at the employees. Their work may slow down, but that doesn't imply that all work will slow down. OpenAI also has this technology that purportedly can do the work without employees. In fact, if the employee work isn't starting to slow down then OpenAI has bigger problems given the business model that keeps getting promised to investors.
I think we should describe a new effect infecting mainstream society:
- AI companies and the rich have increasingly pushed an agenda on the populace that most people didn't want, and the foundation of work in AI was formed by theft.
- Theft of creative work from millions of people, and a selective enforcement of law and compromise of investigatory authorities has demonstrated the law, morals, and the welfare of most people doesn't matter for people in power.
- This is the real "less collaborative" nature of the world where we find ourselves in. Add to that the increasing push for war by our leaders and rich too, people often shielded from the consequences, and you have a net less collaborative world.
It actually isn't even AI, but the same people pushing it are the same ones compromising collaboration for most people.
It tells me that AI companies are just another mechanism to extract and extort value from the masses for the rich.
Just another rich man’s trick
Perhaps the last one before they destroy that world and try to hide away as people forget and history is rewritten again. I don’t think they’ll succeed this time.
